Marengo 1800,
Napoleon's Day of Fate by David Hollins
Having returned from Egypt and seized power
as First Consul, Napoleon led the Army of the Reserve over the Alps
against the Austrian Army besieging Genoa. After a period of skirmishing
and manoeuvering, Melas, the Austrian commander, launched a surprise
attack on the morning of 14 June, having deceived Napoleon as to his
intentions through the use of a double agent. The attack initially drove
the French back to Marengo village and, despite committing the Consular
Guard, by 3pm the French were retreating. Believing he had won, the
wounded Melas left the field to his Chief of Staff, Zach. The timely
arrival of Desaix's Division led by Kellerman's cavalry and the 9e
Légère threw the pursuing Austrians into confusion and turned the battle
in Napoleon's favour, thus securing his position as First Consul. It could
have been very different.

Austerlitz 1805, Battle
of Three Emperors by David G Chandler
Austerlitz was the battle that established Napoleon's reputation:
a classic example of the general's masterly use of deception to lure his
enemy into a carefully devised trap. Beginning with the bold and crushing
advance of the French Army from the Rhine to the Danube, David Chandler
describes the envelopment of Mack's army at Ulm, the manoeuvres to
Austerlitz and the brilliant counter-attack that resulted in decisive
defeat for the Austro-Russian Army.

Aspern
& Wagram 1809, Mighty Clash of Empires by Ian Castle
The 1809 campaign
on the Danube was to break the spell of Napoleon's invincibility. Indeed,
Wagram - the largest battle in history at the time - was Napoleon's
revenge for his first personal defeat on the battlefield - at
Aspern-Essling. Both these two-day battles are described by Ian Castle in
this volume, with detailed maps and graphics that afford the reader the
opportunity to follow the many changes of fortune during the epic battles,
as each side captured, lost then recaptured key positions.

Eggmühl 1809, Storm
Over Bavaria by Ian Castle
This account focuses on the early part of
the campaign between Austria and France, providing a companion narrative
to Campaign 33, Aspern & Wagram 1809. The Author deals with the
changes in the armies following Austria's defeat in 1805, and builds
through the clashes at Teugn-Hausen, Abensburg, and Lanshut to culminate
in the Battle of Eggmühl. Neither Charles nor Napoleon were to achieve
their objectives at Eggmühl - but the ground had been prepared for a bloody
end to the 1809 campaign.

Badajoz 1812,
Wellington's Bloodiest Siege by Ian Fletcher
The fortress towns of Ciudad Rodrigo and
Badajoz control the two main routes between Portugal and Spain: if
Wellington were to consolidate his position in the Peninsula they had to
be taken. Whilst Ciudad Rodrigo fell without much difficulty, the storming
of Badajoz was an epic action involving Wellington's infantry in some of
the most savage hand-to-hand fighting of the whole Peninsula War. In a
nightmare assault on the night of 6 April 1812, Wellington's soldiers
hacked their way through the huge medieval walls of the town, which were
held with great tenacity, skill and courage by the resolute French and
German garrison. Having stormed the town, the battle crazed army went
berserk. The horrors of the sacking which followed, as much as the sublime
courage of the attackers, have passed into legend.

Salamanca 1812,
Wellington Crushes Marmont by Ian Fletcher This
was the most decisive battle of the entire Peninsula War. Wellington
smashed Marmont's French Army and his pursuit of its shattered remnants
led to the famous cavalry charge of the King's German Legion at Garcia
Hernandez. There would be two more years of sieges and hard fighting
before the Iron duke crossed the Pyrenees into France but from Salamanca
the British and their Portuguese and Spanish Allies always had the upper
hand.

Leipzig 1813, the
Battle of the Nations by Peter Hofschroer Leipzig,
the greatest clash of arms before the First World War, was the truly
decisive engagement of the Napoleonic Wars. After the disastrous 1812
Russian campaign, half a million men in five armies settled the fate of
Germany; the fate of Europe followed inexorably upon that. Including fully
detailed lists of the opposing forces, Peter Hofschroer describes
the series of escalating battles - including Liebertwolkwitz, the greatest
cavalry battle in history - by which the Emperor was at last brought to
bay.

Vittoria 1813,
Wellington Sweeps the French from Spain by Ian Fletcher The
battle of Vittoria, on 21 June 1813, was the deciding battle of the
Peninsula war. Joseph's army lost over 150 guns as well as the greatest
treasure that had ever been taken on a battlefield. Following Wellington's
victory there the French army was pushed back over the Pyrenees and into
France. This ended Napoleon's ambitions in the Iberian peninsula once and
for all and opened the doorway for an invasion of France itself.
